Located at
the northern boundary of the Adriatic sea, Trieste is in the heart of
the new Europe enlarged to the East, in an extremely
particular environmental and geopolitical position. The
city overlooks the clear sea with its coast made of
white calcareous rocks covered by Mediterranean
vegetation. Behind the city a large green plateau goes
up to the mounts of the near Slovenia
.
The birth of the city under the Ancient Roman Empire is
evidenced by many visible ruins. Then, in the eighteenth
and nineteenth century, the town planning
developed
becoming as it is at present. Trieste has always
welcomed all different ethnic groups, being open to the
world and breeding ground for culture. A number of
museums, theatres and concerts are constantly active and
very frequented. Extraordinary international sports
events take place every year gathering thousands of
people, as it is for the very popular sailing race "Barcolana"
that offers a show of 2000 sails in a single race in
front of the city. |
